Your child's first season: a parent's FAQ

Eight questions every new sports parent asks, answered the way we answer everything — honestly.

What actually happens at a first class?

Less than you fear. A warm-up game, some skill play with a lot of laughing, water breaks, and a coach whose first goal is that your child wants to come back. Nobody is evaluated. Arrive ten minutes early, introduce your child by name, and let the coach take it from there.

What should we bring?

Water, closed-toe athletic shoes, clothes your child can move in, and sun protection for outdoor classes. Equipment is provided at our free classes. That's the whole bag.

What do I do during class — stay or go?

For young children, stay where they can find your face. For older kids, staying or stepping away are both fine. What helps most, at any age: watch warmly, cheer effort, and let the coach do the coaching — two adults giving instructions is one too many.

My child is older than the others and has never played. Are they behind?

Behind whom? Every child in a beginner class is a beginner. Our guides are full of sports where starting at ten, twelve, even fourteen is normal — and a first season's real goals are friends, movement and wanting to return. Those have no age.

What if my child cries, clings, or refuses to join in?

Normal, especially at four, five, six. Give it three sessions before deciding anything — most kids cross the line from watching to playing somewhere in week two. Coaches have seen it a hundred times; let them work their trade.

What if my child doesn't like the sport?

Then we found that out — cheaply, in one free season, which is exactly what these classes are for. Try the next sport; the quiz and the guides are built for this moment. A child who quits soccer isn't quitting sports. They're narrowing the search.

How are the adults around my child screened?

Ask — of us and of any program, and expect a straight answer. Our accreditation standard publishes exactly what we verify: background screening, abuse-prevention training, the two-adult rule and more. Read it, and hold every program your child joins to the same questions.

How do I sign up, and what does it cost?

Our community classes are free — that's not an introductory rate, it's the model. Find the current season on the free classes page, and if the class you want is full, join the list for the next one. The only cost is a Saturday.
