Michigan
He was the first head coach of the University of Michigan women's volleyball program, leading the team from 1973 to 1983, and helped build both the men's club and the women's program in their earliest years. In 1981 he led Michigan to the school's first Big Ten volleyball championship, along with an AIAW regional title and an eighth-place national finish.
National teams
The American Volleyball Coaches Association has recognized his work as a consultant to both the U.S. and Chinese women's national teams.
Engineer and founder
Alongside his volleyball career, Vong built a distinguished record in engineering. He earned a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering and a master's in materials engineering from the University of Michigan, spent 25 years at Ford Motor Company as a senior research engineer, received the Henry Ford Technological Award, and holds multiple U.S. patents in glass coating and thin-film technologies. He later founded Insight Sports, bringing engineering and technology to sports innovation. In 2021 he and his family established the Vong Family Endowment to support the development of young volleyball coaches.
