Is basketball right for your child?
The most-played team sport in America — a hoop in every park, a league in every neighborhood, and a clear ladder from the driveway to wherever your child wants to take it. Here's the whole picture, told straight.
- BOYS & GIRLS · THE BIG ONE — the only team sport with double-digit participation for both boys and girls ages 6–12; welcoming, informal, everywhere.
- JUNIORS · A REAL LADDER — park and Y leagues, AAU travel ball, and the elite EYBL circuit — with the NBA and USA Basketball publishing age-by-age limits on how much is healthy.
- COLLEGE · THE HARDEST DOOR — about 36,000 NCAA roster spots nationwide, real scholarships under new rules, and a campus hoops life that exists far beyond varsity.

TRYOUTS: ASK THE CLUBChecked · Sep 2026Please tell us what you want done, and we'll do it. It usually takes 24 to 48 hours.
You don't have to decide that today.
There is an athlete in every child. Some just haven't met their sport yet. Basketball's case is simple: it is the sport your child can start today — a ball, a hoop, and any park in Los Angeles — and the one they can keep playing informally for the rest of their lives, whatever level they reach.
Organized play starts around seven or eight — the youngest tier the NBA and USA Basketball's joint youth guidelines formally address — with courts, baskets, and balls all sized down so young kids succeed early. Younger than that, the driveway counts.
Day oneThe first practiceSmall groups, sized-down baskets, and fundamentals — dribbling, footwork, teamwork. Bring shoes and a water bottle; the ball can be borrowed.
A first session at a typical SoCal program is a small-group instructional clinic: ball handling, footwork, shooting form, and plenty of moving around — group coaching, not one-on-one drilling. Programs run in 6–8 week seasons, once or twice a week, exactly the rhythm a beginner needs.
What to bring, straight from the clubs' own pages: comfortable clothes to move in, basketball or running shoes, and a water bottle. Most programs ask families to bring their own ball but keep loaners on hand — "not required but encouraged" is the standard line.
Fifteen words you'll hear from the sideline
- Point guard — the player who brings the ball up and runs the offense
- Man-to-man / zone — guarding one assigned player vs. guarding an area of the floor
- Press — full-court defensive pressure; youth rules limit it at younger ages
- Travel — moving the pivot foot illegally while holding the ball
- Double dribble — dribbling with both hands, or stopping and restarting
- Foul — illegal contact (personal) or conduct (technical)
- Free throw — the uncontested shot awarded after certain fouls
- Rebound — grabbing the ball off a missed shot
- Screen — legally blocking a defender's path to free a teammate
- Fast break — attacking before the defense gets set
- Shot clock — the timer forcing a shot; enters the game at older youth levels
- AAU — the Amateur Athletic Union, the main sanctioning body for travel teams
- Tryouts — the drills-plus-scrimmage session where travel teams pick rosters
- EYBL — Nike's Elite Youth Basketball League, the top exposure circuit
- Sports sampling — playing multiple sports; the guidelines recommend not specializing in basketball before 14
Beyond fitnessWhat your child gainsFitness, sharper thinking, and the team-sport edge — the psychosocial research puts team sports ahead of individual ones.
The physical case is the CDC's own: active kids carry higher fitness, lower body fat, stronger bones and muscles — and basketball delivers all three activity types the guidelines call for. The brain follows: the same guidance links activity to better cognition, memory, and academic performance, with reduced symptoms of depression.
The team-sport edge is measured, not assumed: in the Aspen Institute's psychosocial survey work, team sports outscored individual sports on personal and social skills, goal-setting, and initiative. And basketball's own draw, in the industry's words: welcoming, accessible, everybody can do it — girls and boys, all ages.
Told straight, from the dataThe injury pictureAnkles and fingers mostly; knees and concussions are the ones to know about — and the sport's own guidelines cap weekly hours to prevent the overuse half.
The pediatricians' list, in order: ankle sprains (landing on another player's foot), jammed fingers (sometimes fractures), knee injuries — including ACL tears, which are more common in girls — shoulder injuries, eye injuries, and concussions. The CDC classifies basketball as a contact sport, and its data says the quiet part clearly: over half of girls' high-school basketball concussions come from colliding with another athlete.
The overuse half has an official answer: the NBA and USA Basketball's guidelines call overscheduling and burnout "too common," and publish hard caps — at ages 7–8, no more than 3 hours of organized basketball a week with 2 rest days; even at 12–14, 10 hours a week is the ceiling. Prevention is the boring, proven kind: a physical 6 weeks before the season, conditioning, good shoes, and a coach with an emergency plan.
The price of entryGear and what it costsThe cheapest serious sport there is: a ball and shoes, roughly $60–$160 total — and the ball can be borrowed on day one.
A first basketball runs about $15–$50 depending on size and quality; kids' basketball shoes run roughly $45–$112. That's the whole kit — no pads, no helmet, no racket. Ball size scales with age (27.5" for the youngest, 28.5" around 9–12, full-size 29.5" from about 12–14), so buy the size their league specifies, not the one that looks impressive.
Program costs, where clubs publish them: SoCal YMCA skills clinics start around $80–$90 for 8 weeks, and standard Y league seasons run about $200–$220. AAU's own membership is $22–$24 a year — the travel-club fees on top of it vary club by club, and most don't publish them: ask directly, and treat a straight answer as a good sign.
How junior basketball is organizedThe ladder, rung by rungPark league → travel ball → elite circuit → high school — each rung optional, each real, and the governing bodies say don't rush.
The bottom rungs are everywhere: YMCA, Boys & Girls Clubs, parks and rec — short 6–8 week seasons, everything sized down, participation first. The competitive rung is AAU travel ball: open tryouts by age group (about 75 minutes of drills and scrimmage; clubs suggest attending several to find the right fit), more practices, weekend tournaments. Above that sits the elite exposure circuit — Nike's EYBL, 32 top programs nationally on the boys' and girls' sides each — and high school ball under CIF, with the Southern Section running our region.
Two rules from the sport's own guidelines worth writing down: don't specialize in basketball before 14 — playing multiple sports demonstrably feeds skills back into basketball — and respect the hour caps at every age. The ladder rewards patience; it punishes families who sprint it.
The local landscapeBasketball, right hereDense infrastructure from the Valley to the Inland Empire — decades-old clubs, an EYBL program, and a Y league within reach of nearly everyone.
The region's depth shows in its institutions: CAVS Youth Basketball has run developmental and travel teams for thirty years out of the San Fernando Valley, with its own named tournament series; Cal Stars fields one of the nation's 32 Nike Girls EYBL programs with a Southern California branch; and the Y network — Long Beach, Metro LA's Jr. Clippers programs, the Inland Empire's West End branches — keeps standing leagues running year after year.
Entry costs less than you'd guess: Y clinics from about $80, and Boys & Girls Clubs across LA County serving ages roughly 5–18 as the community's low-cost door. Wherever you live in our region, a first basketball season is close and affordable.
Three pathways — pick the one that sounds like your family
The right next step depends on what you're hoping for, so choose honestly — and know that children move between these all the time. Every pathway starts the same place: a first try.

That's AAU tryout season at a travel club — more practice, weekend tournaments, real competition. Try several clubs' tryouts before committing, mind the weekly hour caps, and keep a second sport until at least 14.

It can — and honesty helps more than hype. Roughly 36,000 athletes hold NCAA basketball roster spots across all three divisions, against the millions of kids playing; it is the hardest door in American youth sports. The path runs through high school ball plus club exposure, the NCAA's own eligibility steps, and — under the new rules — scholarships set by roster limits rather than the old caps. And if the varsity door doesn't open, campus hoops doesn't end: club and intramural basketball thrive at nearly every university.

Where basketball can lead
THE VARSITY ROADReal scholarships, new rules, honest odds.About 36,000 NCAA roster spots across three divisions — and since 2025-26, scholarships follow roster limits, not the old caps.
Division I is the televised summit; Division II balances sport and study with partial aid; Division III plays for the love of it, no athletic scholarships. The House settlement changed the money: schools that opt in may now offer aid to any player on the roster — the NCAA itself notes this more than doubles what can be offered to women. One protection worth knowing: once awarded, a scholarship can't be revoked unless the student transfers. The road there runs through CIF high school ball, club exposure, and coach contact through the schools' own recruiting questionnaires.
EVERYONE ELSE STILL PLAYSCampus basketball is bigger than varsity.Club and intramural hoops thrive campus-by-campus — UCLA fields club teams alongside its varsity programs — with no tryout anxiety attached.
Unlike some sports, collegiate club basketball has no single national governing body or championship — it's organized campus-by-campus through club-sports offices, which in practice means nearly every school has a team and a pickup culture besides. For the kid who loves the game without chasing the 36,000, the sport simply continues: intramurals, club ball, and a lifetime of runs at the local gym.
The first three steps, from the NCAA itself
- Register with the NCAA Eligibility Center at eligibilitycenter.org — the NCAA suggests a certification account by around eighth grade for kids aiming at Division I or II. Coaches can check whether your child is registered, and they do.
- Fill out the recruiting questionnaire on each target program's own site — that's the school's front door, separate from the Eligibility Center, and every program listed above has one.
- Let the leadership shift on schedule. The NCAA's own guidance: parents lead the process in 9th and 10th grade — and by 11th, the athlete does the talking. Coaches recruit players, not parents.
Questions parents ask
What age should my child start?
Organized programs formally start around 7–8 — the youngest tier the NBA/USA Basketball guidelines address — but informal play starts whenever a ball fits their hands. Youngest divisions use 6-foot baskets and smaller balls, so early success is built in.
How many hours a week is healthy?
The sport publishes its own answer: at 7–8, no more than 3 hours of organized basketball weekly with 2 rest days; at 9–11 and 12–14 the caps rise gradually, topping at 10 hours weekly for 12–14 — with the guidelines warning against stacking another sport right at that limit.
Is basketball safe for my daughter?
Safe enough that it's the biggest girls' team sport in America — with two facts worth knowing rather than fearing: ACL tears are more common in girls, and girls' high-school basketball ranks among the higher concussion-rate sports, over half from player collisions. Good conditioning programs specifically target ACL risk; a coach who takes warm-ups seriously is your best screen.
What actually happens at an AAU tryout?
About 75 minutes of skill drills plus scrimmaging, by age group. Bring a ball if you have one (clubs keep spares). Clubs themselves suggest attending several tryouts — the fit matters more than the badge.
What does AAU basketball cost?
The AAU membership itself is $22–$24 a year. The real cost is the club's fees on top — practices, tournaments, travel — and most clubs don't publish them. Ask directly before tryouts; a club that answers plainly is telling you something good about itself.
When should my child specialize in basketball?
Not before 14 — that's USA Basketball and the NBA's own recommendation, backed by research that early single-sport specialization may hurt long-term performance. Multiple sports feed skills back into basketball. The governing bodies are telling you to relax; believe them.
What are the real odds of a college scholarship?
About 36,000 athletes hold NCAA basketball roster spots across all divisions — against millions playing youth ball. The new roster-limit rules genuinely expanded scholarships, especially for women, but the door stays the hardest in youth sports. Play for the game; let college be a bonus, not the plan.
Do they need expensive gear to start?
No sport asks less: a $15–$50 ball sized to their age and $45–$112 shoes, done. Day one at most programs, even the ball can be borrowed. Spend on shoes that fit, not on anything else.
