Parent Guides · Volleyball

Is volleyball right for your child?

There is nothing to decide before they start.

  • BOYS · MEN'S INDOOR — the fastest-growing boys' high school sport, with the narrowest college door, and a second door most families never hear about.
  • GIRLS · WOMEN'S INDOOR — the biggest team sport for American girls, having its loudest moment in history.
  • BEACH — the NCAA's newest women's championship, and Southern California is its capital.

How club volleyball is organized

Four organizations, and what each one means for you.

USA Volleyball · SCVA and NCVAThe national body and its two California regions. Registered clubs follow region rules, carry region insurance, and play the sanctioned events that lead to qualifiers and college exposure.
AAU VolleyballA separate, large circuit — many clubs register here instead of, or as well as, USAV. Its own tournaments and its own national championship.
JVAA club-run association with its own events; membership is a signal of an established club.
Rec, school, beachPark leagues and school teams run outside all of this. Beach clubs have their own circuit. Most children start here.
First, the question itself

You don't have to decide that today.

Many parents ask whether their child is "suited" for volleyball — tall enough, athletic enough, coordinated enough. Here is our answer, and it applies to every sport we teach: there is nothing to decide before they start. Starting is how a child discovers their coordination, their confidence, their interests, and their potential — those aren't entry requirements, they're the results. The first step isn't an evaluation. It's an invitation.

There is an athlete in every child. Our job is the introduction.

The shape of the gameWhat makes volleyball different from other team sportsA net instead of contact: all the teamwork, strategy, and skill — none of the collisions.

A century ago, volleyball's designers put a net between the teams — and that one decision still defines the sport. Opponents never collide, because they never touch. What's left is everything else a team sport teaches, concentrated: reading a play as it develops, talking constantly, trusting the two teammates who must touch the ball before and after you. The rules force three touches, three players, on nearly every point — there is no such thing as a volleyball ball-hog.

Some sports build contact in on purpose — in soccer, the tackle is a legal, coached part of the craft, and some kids want exactly that. Volleyball is the other design: for the child who loves skill, strategy, and belonging to a team, but has no appetite for bodies flying — this is their sport. Neither design is better. Matching a child to the right one is the whole job, and it's ours.

The first practiceWhat your child actually needs on day oneGrippy shoes, knee pads, a water bottle — and age seven or later. Everything else can wait.

Knee pads aren't optional decoration — volleyball players learn to dive to the floor to keep a ball alive, and the pads are what make that fearless instead of painful. Kids typically start around age seven or later, when hand-eye coordination is ready; club divisions under USA Volleyball begin around nine, junior beach divisions around twelve.

Ten words you'll hear from the bleachers

  • Dig — a diving save that keeps an attacked ball off the floor.
  • Kill — an attack the other team can't return. A point, earned.
  • Ace — a serve that scores all by itself.
  • Setter — the playmaker. Touches the ball second, decides everything.
  • Outside hitter — usually the lead attacker, swinging from the left.
  • Libero — the defensive specialist in the different-colored jersey.
  • Block — meeting the attack at the net with raised hands.
  • Side-out — winning the rally back from the serving team.
  • Roll shot — a soft, arcing attack that floats over the block.
  • Pancake — a flat hand slid along the floor; the ball bounces off the back of it. The crowd's favorite.

What a season looks like

  • Girls' club: tryouts in fall, competition through winter and spring, building to the national championships each June and July — where more than 25,000 girls compete. It is the largest pipeline in American youth sport.
  • Boys' club: a later calendar — tryouts in fall, the season opening in earnest each December, closing with roughly 6,000 boys at June nationals. Smaller field, faster growth: USA Volleyball calls boys' volleyball the fastest-growing high school sport in the country.
  • Beach: the opposite rhythm — an outdoor, warm-weather season, with junior divisions run through AVP and USA Volleyball formats. In Southern California, that season barely ends.
Told straight, from the dataThe injury picture1.31 injuries per 1,000 player-exposures — the lower end of tracked sports. Ankles and overuse lead, by design.

Every sport has an injury picture, and a parent deserves to see it in numbers, not adjectives. Volleyball's comes from the national high-school injury surveillance system: 1.31 injuries per 1,000 times a player takes the floor. For scale, the same system tracks nine sports — girls' soccer records 2.65 and football 3.96, sports where contact is part of the design. Different designs, different profiles; every sport in our directory publishes its own, in its own guide.

What volleyball's injuries actually are: about half are sprains and strains, and the ankle leads everything — roughly a quarter of all volleyball injuries, most at the net, landing on someone else's foot. Good coaching teaches safe landing footwork from the first week. The slower story matters more: overuse — jumper's knee from repetitive explosive jumping, shoulder wear from thousands of overhead swings, lower-back stress that still-growing spines feel most. Head impacts happen here too, mostly from ball and floor rather than bodies; any suspected one comes out of play, no exceptions. And for families on the serious track: at the college level, ACL tears are the most frequent severe injury in the women's game — one more reason the best programs drill landing mechanics like a skill.

If your child is under high-school age, here's the honest truth about numbers: no national system tracks injuries in elementary-age rec leagues, so any site quoting a rate for 8-year-olds is inventing it. At those ages, the protection isn't a statistic — it's the rulebook and the club: age-banded formats, graduated equipment, adults trained and background-checked under SafeSport. Ask your club how they handle all three. Good clubs answer proudly.

What the doctors prescribe is exactly what we believe: pediatric sports-medicine guidance says to limit how many teams a child plays on in a season, and to avoid year-round specialization in a single sport. A child who plays volleyball in the fall and tries fencing in the spring isn't behind — by the medical evidence, they're being protected.

Beyond fitnessWhat your child gainsA body that can jump — and a kid who can be counted on. This is a character sport disguised as a ball game.

The body first: jumping, agility, and full-body coordination, in a sport a child can play for decades. Peer-reviewed research on structured youth volleyball programs has measured something parents care about more: gains in personal responsibility, effort, and respect for others. An emerging line of research is examining the sport's effects on reaction time and decision-making in young players.

Then the person. Because no one can play volleyball alone, a child learns to communicate under pressure, to cooperate with personalities they didn't choose, to take responsibility for their third of the court, and to see the whole play — the big picture — instead of just their own touch. Those are friendships and habits that outlast every season, and they travel: into classrooms, into college, into the first job. Coaches will tell you which kids fall in love with it — the ones who like reading a play as it develops, and the ones who discover they love being counted on.

Most parents meet volleyball in a school gym, watching kids who all seem to know something theirs doesn't — yet. Here's the whole picture: what the sport asks of a child, what it gives back, and where it can lead. One honest note first: volleyball is really three sports wearing one name, and which one your child plays changes the road ahead.

The college picture

Where volleyball can lead

The section every parent scrolls to, said the way we'd want it said to us: three tracks, three very different college landscapes — including the money. Open each lane.

Girls · Women's IndoorThe big, loud, wide-open laneThe most sponsored path, full scholarships at Division I — and the sport's biggest moment in history.

Women's volleyball is among the most sponsored women's team sports in college athletics, with full championships in every NCAA division. At the Division I level it has long been a full-scholarship sport — awards given as complete scholarships, not split into fragments — and under the NCAA's 2025–26 settlement reforms, per-sport scholarship caps were eliminated entirely for participating schools, replaced by roster limits, with every rostered athlete eligible for aid.

And the sport is having a moment with no precedent: 92,003 people filled Nebraska's football stadium for a 2023 match — the world attendance record for any women's sporting event — and multiple professional leagues now play simultaneously in the U.S., which means, for the first time, American girls can watch a career that continues past college.

If you're serious, research these first — the current national top ten runs Nebraska, Texas, Kentucky, Pittsburgh, Stanford, Wisconsin, Louisville, Texas A&M, Purdue, and Penn State, and closer to home Long Beach State fields a proud program. Every school's own recruiting questionnaire, on its athletics site, is the front door — fill it out there, nowhere else.

Boys · Men's IndoorThe narrow door — and the second doorVarsity spots are scarce — but nearly 500 universities field serious club teams, and SoCal is the heartland.

We won't dress this up: varsity men's volleyball is one of college sports' narrowest doors — about 74 Division I/II programs nationally, plus around 145 in Division III. It has long been a partial-scholarship sport, a small pool divided across the roster, and while the 2025–26 reforms lifted the old caps for participating schools, the honest wrinkle is that not every university opted in — at least one chose to field a club team instead of funding a varsity men's program. Scarcity is the defining fact of this lane.

But there's a second door most families never hear about. Nearly 500 universities field competitive men's club teams under the National Collegiate Volleyball Federation, with a national championship of their own — and elite academic schools play in it seriously. Your son can still play at Berkeley. The honest takeaway: for boys, volleyball is a sport worth choosing for love and for the application file — not for a scholarship bet. And the good news for us: much of the varsity map sits within driving distance. Southern California is men's volleyball's historic heartland.

Five of those are a day trip from our festival. Start with each program's own athletics page and questionnaire.

BeachThe newest lane — and it runs through our sandAn NCAA women's championship whose finals read like a Southern California roll call.

The NCAA sponsors beach volleyball as a women's championship — one national title contested across all divisions, now with dozens of universities and roughly a thousand student-athletes. Recent finals read like a Southern California roll call: USC has won four national titles this decade, UCLA and Stanford met in the most recent final, and LMU, Cal Poly, and Long Beach State all field varsity programs. A girl who grows up on our beaches grows up in the sport's capital.

For boys, honesty again: there is no NCAA men's beach championship. The pathway runs through club programs, USA Volleyball's collegiate beach events, and the junior-college ranks — real volleyball, growing fast, without the varsity letter.

The honest partHow the door actually works — and the money mapCourt records show what a real athletic file is worth — 83% versus 16% at Harvard — and why the front door is the only door.

Serious families deserve the documented version, so here it is. In the Harvard admissions litigation, the university's own internal research, filed in federal court, showed that recruited athletes with top academic ratings were admitted at 83 percent — against 16 percent for non-athletes with the same ratings. The Ivy League runs recruits through a published Academic Index with a hard conference floor: the athlete must be a real student, but the athlete's file is read through a different door. Those numbers are documented for Harvard and the Ivy League specifically — but they show, in court records rather than recruiting-industry promises, that a genuine athletic career changes how a selective university reads an application.

Now the money map, precisely: the eight Ivy League schools award no athletic scholarships in any sport — a policy a federal appeals court affirmed in 2026 — and their recruits receive need-based aid like every other student. In the same ruling, the court itself named the alternative: schools like Stanford, Duke, Michigan, Georgetown, and Vanderbilt pair elite academics with athletic scholarships. Two different bargains, both real. Know which one you're negotiating.

And the part we insist on saying: in 2019, federal prosecutors charged fifty people — parents, coaches, administrators at schools including Yale, Stanford, USC, and Georgetown — for buying admission through fake athletic profiles. People went to prison for it. That scandal worked precisely because a real athletic record is so valuable that a counterfeit one was worth millions. Our position is the Federation's founding position: the front door is the only door. Build the real record — the seasons, the film, the documented hours — and the front door genuinely opens.

The first three steps, from the NCAA itself

  1. Register with the NCAA Eligibility Center at eligibilitycenter.org — the NCAA suggests a certification account by around eighth grade for kids aiming at Division I or II. Coaches can check whether your child is registered, and they do.
  2. Fill out the recruiting questionnaire on each target program's own site — that's the school's front door, separate from the Eligibility Center, and every program listed above has one.
  3. Let the leadership shift on schedule. The NCAA's own guidance: parents lead the process in 9th and 10th grade — and by 11th, the athlete does the talking. Coaches recruit players, not parents.
Whatever the lane — the season pays interest for decades

A Harvard Business School study followed 401,785 Ivy League graduates across half a century. The athletes out-earned their classmates over their careers and reached the executive suite more often — and the gap grew widest twenty to twenty-five years after graduation. Measured across all sports, not volleyball alone; but the finding matches what we see in our own community: the kid who learned to be counted on at practice becomes the adult a firm builds around.

Most kids will never play a college sport — and that was never the point. A young athlete who serves, leads, and follows through builds a record that colleges recognize regardless of recruiting lists. That's why our teens pair their sport with the Congressional Award through the Teen Leadership Corps: sport, service, and leadership, documented for years — certified by Congress, not claimed in an essay.

Questions parents ask

Is volleyball safe for kids?

Volleyball's injury rate is on the lower end of tracked high-school sports — 1.31 injuries per 1,000 player-exposures — with ankles and overuse leading the list, because the net removes opponent contact by design. Every sport carries some risk; the full picture, in numbers, is in the injury section above.

What age should my child start?

Around seven or later for general classes, when hand-eye coordination is ready. USA Volleyball club divisions begin around nine, and junior beach divisions around twelve. Starting "late" is common — many varsity players began in middle school.

Does my child need to be tall?

No. Children don't need the "right" body, height, or athletic ability to begin — starting is how those develop, and positions like libero and setter reward quickness and decision-making over height. Let the sport reveal the player.

Do boys and girls play on the same calendar?

No — girls' club season builds to nationals each June–July, while boys' club season starts in December and finishes at June nationals. Beach runs on a warm-weather calendar, which in Southern California barely ends.

Are there volleyball scholarships?

Yes, with big differences by track: women's indoor has long been a full-scholarship sport at Division I, men's indoor shares a small partial-scholarship pool across few programs, and the Ivy League offers no athletic scholarships at all — need-based aid instead. The college section above maps all of it.

How does college recruiting actually start?

Register with the NCAA Eligibility Center around eighth grade, fill out each target program's own recruiting questionnaire, and let your child lead the conversations by 11th grade. Coaches recruit players, not parents.

Indoor or beach — which first?

Most kids start indoor because classes and clubs are everywhere, then add beach in summer; the skills transfer both ways. In Southern California, playing both is normal — and the doctors would tell you variety protects young bodies anyway.

Ready to let them try?
