Is soccer right for your child?

Soccer's rules fit in a sentence a five-year-old understands — get the ball in the other goal, no hands — which is why five-year-olds play it on every continent. Underneath the simple sentence is the deepest team game on earth: constant motion, constant decisions, no timeouts, no play-calling from the sideline. Every child on the field reads the game and chooses, two hundred times a match.

And we'll say the design truth plainly, because it's the honest counterpart to what our volleyball guide says about the net: soccer builds contact in on purpose. The tackle — winning the ball with your body and feet, legally and cleanly — is part of the sport's craft, coached and refereed at every level, and at high levels the game is genuinely physical. Some kids want exactly that: the duel, the shoulder, the fifty-fifty ball. Others don't, and that's what our other guides are for. Neither instinct is wrong. Matching a child to the right design is the whole job, and it's ours.

Day one: soccer cleats, shin guards (mandatory under the sport's laws — no shin guards, no play), a water bottle, and the right ball: smaller sizes for younger kids, full size around the early teens. Kids commonly start at four or five in park programs — the youngest starting age of any sport we teach.

Fifteen words you'll hear from the sideline

• Pitch — the field.
• Kickoff — the restart that begins each half and follows each goal.
• Dribble — moving the ball with the feet while under control.
• Pass — playing the ball to a teammate. The whole sport, repeated.
• Cross — a ball driven in from the wide areas toward the goal.
• Tackle — winning the ball, legally, with the feet or body.
• Header — playing the ball with the head. Age-restricted for children; see the rules below.
• Offside — the rule every parent learns third, and argues about forever.
• Throw-in — restarting play with the hands from the sideline.
• Corner kick — a restart from the corner after the defense puts the ball out.
• Free kick — the restart awarded after a foul.
• Penalty kick — a direct shot from twelve yards after a foul in the box.
• Keeper — the goalkeeper, the only player who may use hands.
• Striker — the forward whose job is scoring.
• Midfielder — the link between defense and attack; the engine room.

Now the map — the part parents actually need

American youth soccer is several organizations, not one, and they serve different families.

• AYSO — the neighborhood recreational league, built on "everyone plays": every child gets field time, volunteer coaches, local seasons. This is where millions of kids fall in love with the game, and for many families it's the whole, happy story.
• US Youth Soccer — the country's largest youth soccer body, running state associations (ours is Cal South), leagues from recreational to elite, and a development pathway.
• US Club Soccer — a second national body sanctioning competitive clubs and leagues.
• The elite tier: MLS NEXT (the professional clubs' academy league, boys), ECNL (elite clubs, boys and girls), and the Girls Academy (girls). These are the leagues college and pro scouts actually watch.

The ladder, plainly: park recreational soccer → competitive "club" or "travel" soccer with tryouts → an elite-league club for the small number chasing the top. A family can stop happily at any rung — and the doctors would remind you the rungs are supposed to include off-seasons.

This is soccer's own house, so we say it plainly, the way we'd want it said to us. In the national high-school surveillance data, girls' soccer records 2.65 injuries per 1,000 player-exposures — roughly double our volleyball figure, in line with a sport where contact is part of the design. Two specifics deserve a parent's clear eyes rather than a marketer's fog.

Heads. Concussion makes up a larger share of injuries in girls' soccer than in any other girls' sport the system tracks — from headers, collisions, and falls. This is exactly why the sport's governing body acted: U.S. Soccer's player-safety rules eliminate heading for the youngest age groups entirely and strictly limit heading practice into early middle school, with concussion-recognition protocols that require a player with a suspected head injury to come out — no exceptions, no toughing it out. Ask any club two questions: how they follow the heading rules, and who on the sideline is trained to recognize a concussion. Good clubs answer proudly.

Knees. ACL tears are the sport's most serious common injury, and the research is consistent that adolescent girls tear ACLs at several times the rate of boys in comparable sports. The encouraging part is equally documented: structured warm-up and landing-mechanics programs measurably reduce that risk — which is why "what does your warm-up look like?" is one of the smartest questions a soccer parent can ask a coach.

And the everyday: sprained ankles, bruises, and muscle strains — the ordinary currency of a running, dueling sport. For children under high-school age, the honest truth from every guide we write: no national system tracks injuries in five-year-old park leagues, so nobody can quote you a rate. At those ages the protection is the rulebook — small-sided games, no heading, graduated contact — and the club: trained volunteers, SafeSport standards, and a culture that teaches the tackle as a skill, not a collision.

What the doctors prescribe is exactly what we believe: limit how many teams a child plays on in a season and avoid year-round specialization in one sport — a caution that matters most in soccer, where club culture can run eleven months if you let it. A child who plays a spring season and swims all summer isn't behind. By the medical evidence, they're being protected.

The body: soccer is continuous running with sprinting inside it — endurance, agility, and coordination in both feet, built in a game so absorbing kids don't notice the miles. It's a sport a person can play from four to seventy, on every continent, for the price of a ball.

The mind and the person: with no timeouts and no plays sent in, soccer hands children something rare — the game is theirs. They read it, decide, fail, and adjust in real time, hundreds of times a match, and the coaching organizations are explicit that this decision-density is the sport's classroom. The team lessons run deep: eleven kids who must defend for each other, and a culture where the duel ends with a handshake. And one gift particular to soccer: it is the world's common language. A child who plays it can walk onto a field in any country, any neighborhood, any language — including every community in Southern California — and belong in five minutes. For our families, that's not a metaphor; that's Saturday.

Soccer is the world's game and America's biggest youth sport — which is exactly why it's the most confusing one for parents. Five different organizations, four kinds of "club," a heading rule, an academy system, and a World Cup that just came to our city. Here's the whole picture, told straight: what the sport asks of a child, what it gives back, and every road it can lead down — including the one that costs families nothing at all.
